The Forgotten Experiment: Eat More Calories to Lose Weight
(14.10.2019) back
Lose that belly fat, even though you are taking in more calories in the form of high-quality carbohydrates
Give this experiment a try for yourself: Lose weight while eating more calories
Potatoes or other starchy foods allow your body to burn off belly fat
High-quality carbohydrates, for example a few potatoes, satisfy your hunger while helping you to lose weight
Satisfy your hunger with brown rice
Natural brown rice: You can eat however much you would like

Back in the 1970s, an interesting experiment was started with 16 participants. The subjects had to eat up to 900 calories more than "normal", and surprisingly they still lost weight while doing so. Moreover, there was another interesting effect.

In the 1970s, scientists with the Human Nutrition Department at the University of Michigan conducted an interesting experiment. The asked somewhat overweight male students to either eat an additional 12 slices of white bread or 12 slices of wholewheat bread every day. This means that the students were supposed to eat what they normally ate, and in addition to that, to consume the additional 12 slices of bread.

The additional calories, in the form of carbohydrates, lead to an astounding result

The bread had an effect: It seems to have curbed their appetites and melted away belly fat that had accumulated due to the consumption of meat, dairy products and plant-based oils. Without consciously paying attention, the students lost weight.

An interesting side effect – a benefit to heart health

There was also another side effect that was especially beneficial: Their general health conditions improved, and their cholesterol levels sank by 60 mg/dl to 80 mg/dl on average.

If you would like to enjoy the benefits of eating carbohydrates in the form of starches – completely contradicting the often touted propaganda surrounding low-carb diets like the Atkins diet or eating paleo – then you can carry out the following easy experiment for yourself: Simply eat more starchy foods, without leaving anything out of your normal diet. Choose one or a combination of the following starch-based foods:

  • 750g of cooked rice (ideally organic brown rice)
  • 400g cooked corn
  • 4 potatoes, boiled and mashed
  • 700g cooked beans, lentils or peas
  • 400g cooked pasta (wholewheat is best)
  • 12 slices of wholewheat bread

Distribute the additional calories from grains, legumes and starchy vegetables throughout the day, incorporating them into your other meals. That's the way to experience the same astounding effects for yourself, just like the university students who lost their abdominal fat.
