We all love to eat a variety of fruits, but should we be concerned about the sugar they contain? Are they harmful to our health?
Fruit is an important part of the diet, and there's no need to fear the sugar it contains!

As young children we likely learned from our parents that we should be eating more fruit. Nowadays we're being told that we should think carefully about eating some kinds of fruit as they contain a lot of sugar in the form of fructose. What's the source of this contradiction? Today we'll get to the bottom of it.

Sweet poison – the fundamental problem with sugar

Today it goes without saying that excessive sugar consumption has a negative impact on our health. We're now being told about this danger whenever we turn on the television, and there are even billboards and posters that inform us about the dangers of sugar.

What exactly is harmful about sugar can be easily explained: let's say that we drink a can of a normal soft drink, which actually contains the equivalent of approximately three tablespoons of sugar. In the first hour after consuming such a drink, our blood sugar greatly increases. In order to manage the increased sugar, the body releases a considerable amount of insulin. Then about an hour later, blood sugar decreases very rapidly from the high level we experienced after enjoying that sugary drink – there's a big swing from very high to very low. The drop in blood sugar is naturally interpreted by the body as a need for food, and the amount of available insulin is relatedly too low. The body reacts by releasing fat into the bloodstream to ensure that the body has sufficient energy available. We also notice this change, for example we might feel mentally or physically tired, and so we reach for another sugar-rich drink to remedy the problem. This roller coaster cycle thus becomes programmed into our everyday behaviour.

As if this wasn't bad enough for our health, by consuming soft drinks we are also taking in a lot of empty calories which become noticeable in our so-called "problem zones", for example the belly or hips, within a very short period of time.

All sugar is not the same – fruit provides a healthy alternative

Just as it's now been made clear that all types of carbohydrates are not bad for you, and in fact our bodies actually need good carbs, it's a similar story for sugar. It's depends on the quality and the source. Fruit represents the healthy alternative, and it has been proven that the advice that you received from your parents – and apple a day for example, as well as other kinds of fruit – is actually correct.

In the course of one study, research subjects drank a glass of water into which three tablespoons of sugar had been dissolved (once again, this is the amount of sugar in an everyday soft drink that you might buy in a vending machine). Another group also received a drink, but for them blended berries were mixed into the water rather than pure sugar. Naturally the blood sugar of all participant did increase and then fall after consuming their drinks, but the result was much less pronounced in those who drank the fruit/water drink and there was no extreme roller coaster effect for them.

Fructose intolerance is not permanent – intestinal cleansing is key

In the course of additional research, it moreover was found that the consumption of berries can actually lessen the insulin spike that occurs when one consumes high-glycemic foods like white bread. All in all, the regular consumption of fruits is an easy recommendation. Current studies have also shown that people who suffer with type 2 diabetes need not avoid fruits entirely. Naturally, one also has to consider the prevalence of fructose intolerance. It is crucial to keep in mind that the vast majority of people with fructose intolerance are not born with it, rather they develop it over time. It is a signal that something isn't right in the lower digestive tract, i.e. there's an imbalance of some kind, and this results in an inability to digest fruits properly.

This condition can in truth often be eliminated. Fructose intolerance can be addressed through a thorough and well-structured cleansing of the stomach and intestinal tract. As long as the symptoms are present, it naturally makes good sense to give your body a break and avoid eating fruit. During a pause like this, the lower digestive system can be cleansed and detoxified. As soon as the affected body region is restored to proper function and is once again in balance, the regular consumption of fruit will once again be possible!
