Why make use of wild plants?

As soon as the early summer months roll around, useful plants like wild herbs begin to spring up in fields and pastures. You'll like see some of these useful plants growing in open spaces while out on a stroll. Still, most people don't give much thought to such possibilities, for example ways in which you can put wild-growing plants to use in your own kitchen – teas are just one example. Today we'll be introducing you to two such plants.

Naturally fresh treasures from a your local meadow

As the days become warmer and grow in length, fields and pasture explode with life. Once the suns rays become strong, the ground becomes covered in green that becomes more intense from one day to the next. Flowers appear everywhere, creating a beautiful scene that fills the heart with positive feelings…whether we're out for a hike in nature or simply a walk around the neighborhood. Oftentimes we don't even realise many of the wild plants we see around us can be beneficial to our health. Moreover, they're easy to "harvest" and can be prepared without a lot of work. As promised above, below you'll find the two examples that we'd like to introduce today.

The first is a plant that is commonly found on almost any walk: dandelions. The leaves of the dandelion plants contain a number of vitamins, including A, C and D…as well as B vitamins. It also provides the body with calcium, zinc, iron and calcium. Dandelion has a cleansing effect on the skin – for example it's helpful in lessening the signs of acne and eczema. It also helps to regulate and detoxify the kidneys and liver. Generally speaking, it's a good choice for those looking to remove some excess water from the body and enjoy some inner cleansing.

Another plant that can be found in the early summer months is also quite common. It's nettles, which can actually improve circulation while at the same time regulating the function of the kidneys and bladder. This is achieved in part through encouraging toxins and excess acid to leave the body. These characteristics make nettle especially valued for the treatment of conditions like gout and arthritis. As an effective blood cleanser, nettle is a good addition to any medicinal herb collection.

Plants with so many possible uses

One of the big advantages of working with wild herb and other wild plants is the many ways that they can be put to use. The classic option is using them to make tea. If you're interesting in giving this a try, keep in mind that you should limit the amount of such teas that you're consuming on a daily basis. The diuretic effect can be too much for the body – no more than two or three cups per day are a recommended guideline. You can likely find the naturally dried, finely chopped leaves of many kinds of useful wild plants in a natural food shop…or perhaps even at your local pharmacy. Keep in mind that if you're new to using wild plants, consult with a professional to make sure that you are making safe choices, for example a pharmacist or someone working in a health food store. Safety first!

If you know a thing or two about the plants you're interested in putting to use, then you can of course search them out on your own. Obviously it's best to avoid areas with a lot of vehicular traffic or any other sources of pollution. Before use, be sure to thoroughly wash the wild plants you've found. If you'd like to try out using nettles, remember that you need to either cook or dry the leaves before consumption in order to neutralise the small, stinging hairs on the leaves. Once done though, there's nothing stopping you from incorporating these plants into your meals. How about a stinging nettle soup, or a delicious salad with nettle leaves that you've prepared as described.
